The Photographs of Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible

A successful New York financial services professional, Clifford “Cliff” Corso has served as executive chairman of Insight Investment since 2015. When he isn’t working, he enjoys reading literature about historic figures overcoming adversity. One of Cliff Corso’s favorite books is Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage.

An illustrated book, Endurance features striking, black-and-white pictures by Frank Hurley, who served as official photographer on Sir Ernest Shackleton’s historic Antarctic expedition. Inclement weather hindered his work throughout this harsh and disaster-plagued journey in the mid-1910s, but Hurley managed to take a number of extraordinary photographs, including one that captured the moment that the explorers’ ship sank.

Shackleton ordered Hurley to leave all his equipment and film behind as they abandoned the sinking vessel. However, Hurley ignored this order, taking a small Kodak camera, three rolls of unexposed still camera film, his recently developed motion picture film, and all but 400 of his glass plate negatives.

Amazingly, many of Hurley’s expedition images survived the difficult journey home. Today, they tell an incredible visual tale of survival in a harsh, unworldly environment.
